Media Analysis#2 Online Journalism

Media has taken over journalism
This diagram is from the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, “The State of the News Media 2013” report reflecting the sources people use for acquiring the news. Digital usage increased by 7.2% in the year 2011-2012, while the biggest declines were found in Network TV and Local TV. It was also found from this same Pew Research study for those that owned smartphones, 62% of the users stated they acquire their news weekly from this device while 64% of tablet owners also get the news weekly via this device (Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism).
If people want to get news faster than all they need to do is check their phones, computers, and all other social media. Getting news by TV or Newspaper is slowly coming to an end, the new media as arrived.
According to a study made by David Squires, journalism has evolved from something that only professional writers can write and produce too something that anyone can create. All they have to do is write about 150 words on Twitter in order to spread the news than those people can spread it too. “Journalism has moved from its organized and old format of newspaper to a new format that anyone can easily create.” (Squires, 2)
The new media can affect how people see certain news like a political election. News stations like Fox News and CNN can tell the viewers what they believe and influence them to listen to their views. There also people who post their opinions on the internet for people to read and that can influence them as well.
Also there is the idea of how fast the news travels and who gets to publish the news first. Kurt Wagner, a professor and senior editor at St. Clara’s university social media news can travel at lighting fast. “When news breaks, journalists are expected to cover it immediately and social media plays a big role, because you can now publish bits of news to your followers as soon as it’s available, so you don’t have to wait for the full story to start sharing the news.” (Wagner, pg 1)
The power of social media is slowly becoming stronger than the normal news like TV radio and newspapers. But it can also be used to someone’s advantage so people should be careful as to how they view the news on the new media, it can be helpful or harmful.
